COLREGs Lights & Shapes Practice Test

The requirement for the height of the after masthead light is guided by the COLREGs, which dictate specific standards for vessel lighting to ensure proper navigation and safety at sea. According to these regulations, the after masthead light must be positioned at least 4.5 meters higher than the forward masthead light. This arrangement helps in preventing confusion in vessel identification during nighttime or reduced visibility conditions, allowing other vessels to clearly distinguish the direction a ship is heading.

The distinct vertical separation of the after masthead light extends visibility due to the varying angles from which different types of vessels may be observing lights. By maintaining this minimum height difference, it ensures that the lights are not visually obstructed by the vessel’s structure or any other potential barriers, thereby enhancing the safety of maritime navigation.

This regulation is particularly critical for vessels of certain lengths; therefore, adherence to the specified height difference is essential for compliance with COLREGs and for effective communication of the vessel’s orientation to other maritime traffic.
